Natural stone or manufactured veneer?

Natural stone lasts indefinitely and weathers well. Manufactured veneer costs less and weighs less, but it is a coating, not a wall.

The practical difference is water. Natural stone laid properly is a durable, forgiving assembly. Manufactured veneer is a thin cementitious product applied over a substrate, and it performs entirely on the quality of what is behind it — the weather-resistant barrier, the drainage plane, the flashing and the weep at the base.

Most manufactured veneer failures in this area are not the stone failing. They are water getting behind the veneer with nowhere to leave, and then freezing.

What hardscape costs depend on

Material, base preparation and access set hardscape pricing far more than square footage does — the base is the part nobody sees.

A patio or wall is only as good as its base. Proper excavation, a compacted aggregate base and real drainage are where the durability lives, and they are also where a cheap quote is usually cutting. In a freeze-thaw climate an inadequate base moves within a couple of winters.

We quote ranges up front and explain what is under them. Ask what base depth is included in any hardscape quote you are comparing.

Common questions

Will a stone veneer wall let water in?

Properly built, no — but the veneer is not what keeps water out. The drainage plane, flashing and weeps behind it do. That detailing is the part worth paying attention to.

Do retaining walls need drainage?

Yes, always. A retaining wall holds back saturated soil, and without drainage behind it that water freezes and pushes the wall out. Most leaning walls we are called to look at have no functioning drainage.

How long does a dry-laid stone wall last?

Generations, when built correctly — the Bluegrass has dry-laid fences well over a century old still standing. The craft is in the stone selection and coursing, not in mortar.
