Questions & Answers

What people ask before they call a mason.

These are the masonry questions we get most often in Lexington, KY, answered the way we would answer them standing at your wall. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

The one thing worth knowing before you call anyone

Find out roughly how old your masonry is. A wall built in 1910 and a wall built in 1995 need different mortar, and using the wrong one causes damage that cannot be undone. It is the first question a good mason will ask you.

When masonry work can be done

Mortar needs temperatures above freezing to cure properly, so the comfortable season in Kentucky runs roughly spring through fall. Winter work is possible with protection and heat, at additional cost. Urgent repairs happen whenever they need to.

Common masonry questions in Lexington

The Mason Contractors Association of America publishes guidance on selecting and working with a mason.

How much does masonry work cost in Lexington?

Access and preparation drive it more than the visible stonework does — the same chimney repair costs very differently at ten feet and at thirty. See our cost guide; assessments are free.

What is efflorescence, the white powder on my brick?

Mineral salts left behind as water moves through masonry and evaporates at the surface. It is a symptom rather than the problem — it tells you water is moving through the wall, and the useful response is to find out where from.

Why is my brick face popping off?

Spalling, caused by moisture in the brick freezing and expanding. Common causes are hard mortar in a soft wall, a sealed surface trapping water, or de-icing salt on steps.

Can I paint my brick house?

You can, and it is essentially permanent — removing paint from brick is difficult and risks the face. Paint also reduces the wall’s ability to breathe, which matters a great deal on older masonry.

Should I seal my brick?

Generally no, especially on older brick. Sealers trap moisture inside the wall. Fix where water is getting in instead.

How long should repointing last?

Several decades with an appropriate mortar. Considerably less, plus brick damage, with the wrong one.

Do you match existing brick and mortar colour?

As closely as practical. On weathered century-old masonry an exact match is not realistic, and salvaged period brick usually beats anything new.

What is that horizontal crack above my window?

Frequently a rusting steel lintel expanding and lifting the masonry above it. It progresses and is worth addressing early.

Can you repair a dry stone fence with mortar?

Please do not. Mortar traps water in a wall built to drain, and the repaired section pushes out within a few winters. See dry stone fence restoration.

Is my foundation crack serious?

Fine vertical hairlines usually are not. Horizontal cracks, stepped diagonal cracking, bowing, or any crack that is widening warrant a look. See foundation masonry repair.
